Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT)

What is CRT?

CRT is a special kind of pacemaker that is used in people with heart failure.

Heart failure is a disease which affects the ability of the heart to pump blood

When the heart beats, the walls of the heart's main chamber (called the "left ventricle") must move at the same time. But in some people with heart failure, the walls of the left ventricle are out of sync. This can make heart failure worse.

A CRT sends electrical impulses the heart to make the walls of the left ventricle move at the same time.

What are the benefits of CRT?

Resynchronization therapy can:

  • Improve symptoms of heart failure

  • Keep people from needing to go to the hospital for heart failure.

  • Allow people with heart failure to live longer.
