Ambulatory blood pressure monitor

What is an ABPM?

A blood pressure monitor is used to measure and record your blood pressure over a 24 hour period during your normal daily routine. A small digital blood pressure monitor is attached to a belt around your waist and connected to a cuff around your upper arm.

What is a ABPM used for?

By measuring your blood pressure at regular intervals over 24 hours, your doctor can get a clear picture of how your blood pressure fluctuates throughout the day and night. There are several reasons why your doctor might suggest this test:

• To confirm if you have high blood pressure and how high is your blood pressure over a 24-hour period.
• If your blood pressure is always high during your doctor's visit, your doctor may want to know if your blood pressure is actually lower outside of the clinic; This is known as the "white coat effect."
• Your doctor may want to how much your blood pressure fluctuates over the 24-hour period.
• To see how well your medicines are working and make sure they control your blood pressure during the day and night.
• To see if your blood pressure stays high at night. If this is the case, your doctor may want to change or adjust your medications.

What happens during a ABPM?

• A blood pressure cuff is placed around the upper arm; either arm can be used.
• The cuff is connected to a digital blood pressure machine. It is attached to a belt around your waist.
• The cuff inflates every 20-60 minutes depending on the setting and then slowly deflates to record the blood pressure in your memory. This is no different from any other blood pressure machine.
• Blood pressure is recorded over the 24-hour period. Don't turn it off at night, as nighttime readings are just as important.
• Since the test is done to determine what your normal daily blood pressure is, it is important to continue your normal routine and do all the things that you would normally do.
• The only thing you should avoid doing during the day is swimming and taking a bath or shower with the machine turned on.
