Implantable cardioverter defibrillator

What is an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD)?

Defibrillators are sophisticated devices that can perform two general functions: record heart activity and treat malignant arrhythmias with one shock.

Most defibrillators also function as pacemakers and can also deliver antitachycardia pacing in the event of a malignant arrhythmia to stop it without shock.

Who is a candidate for an ICD

In general, patients who are at high risk for cardiac arrest should consider an ICD.

Patients for whom an ICD is recommended are:

.

  • Patients who have already had a malignant arrhythmia (if it is not due to a transient or reversible cause).

  • Certain patients who have not had a malignant arrhythmia, but are at high risk for one of these arrhythmias. The estimated risk for these arrhythmias is based on a combination of several risk factors (eg, previous heart attack, severely reduced heart function, cardiomyopathy, congenital heart disease, and / or advanced heart failure).
