Electrical cardioversion

What is electrical cardioversion?

Cardioversion is a medical procedure that restores normal heart rhythm in people with certain types of abnormal heartbeats (arrhythmias). Cardioversion is usually done by sending electrical shocks to your heart through electrodes attached to your chest.

What is electrical cardioversion
  1. Soft electrodes are placed on the chest and perhaps the back. You may need to shave some areas of the skin to get the electrode pads to adhere.

  2. These electrodes will be connected to a cardioversion machine.

  3. You will receive medicine through a vein in your arm to make you fall asleep and not feel any pain.

  4. With the cardioversion machine, a high-energy shock is delivered to your heart. This should turn your heart back to a normal rhythm.

  5. The medical team will closely monitor your heart rate.

  6. The procedure only takes a few minutes. When its done, you'll wake up.
